Release

The one who filled
My heart with light,
Was divine.

The one who entered
My body as my breath
Was divine.

The one after meeting whom,
My soul learned to sing each moment
The music of detachment,
Was divine.

The one I remained tied to,
While he taught me
How to be free,
Was divine.

The one who painted
With the times brush
His time on my time,
Was divine.

The one who filled
The stone with a form
But remained formless,
Was divine.

The one who remained away
But allowed me to feel
That he was always with me,
Was divine.

The one who knocked
On my door again and again
To see that I was awake and not
Asleep,
Was divine।

Man You Are Great

I said to the sky,
‘You are so high!’

The sky smiled
and said, ‘You are
higher than me.’

I said to the sea,
‘You are so deep.’

The sea swelled up and said,
‘You are deeper than me.’

I said the sun,
‘Dear Sun,
you are so bright.’
The sun laughed and said,
‘You are many times
brighter than me.’

I said to man,
‘Man you are great.’

Man said without
hesitation,
‘You are so right.’

Masks

To scare our children
we made some scary
masks.

The children were frightened
for a while.

When they got wise about the masks,
they smiled.

The children are
no longer small.
They frighten us now
wearing our masks।

Why Did I Wish

Today, the bird
looked at me intently,
then suddenly
flew away in fright.

I was sad when I realized
that I had wished
for a cage
to hold the bird in।

Paths

Bird, the entire sky
is yours. Each time
you fly you make
your own path. Then you travel
from one end of the horizon
to the other singing all the while.

But the world gets lost,
or is ruined,
or loses itself
travelling the paths
it made for itself.

Your path, bird, however,
is always defined.
In using it
you leave the sky pristine।

Emptiness

A bird alighted;
near it another bird
Came and sang.
The entire sky
resounded with the birds’
singing.

It’s man only who could not fill
his life’s emptiness
with mutual mild talk।

Faith

I asked the bird,
‘The sky is vast,
are you not afraid
of getting lost?’

The bird said,
‘I know how to return
to my own पर्च

Mirror holder

Whenever I cried
my mother held up
a mirror and said,
‘Look, this is how you look
when you weep’.

I laughed then,
imagining my
weepy face without even
glancing at the mirror.

Mother too cried once
when her mother died.
After that my mother
did nor laugh as see used to
till see died.
Perhaps there was no one
to hand a mirror to my mother.

Per haps we lose
one by one, those who
show us our face
by holding up a mirror।

I Do Not Ask
Sometimes I wish to ask you
like a mere child,
‘Please tell me,
who gives to the sun
its light?

Who brings so much blueness
to the sky?

Who keeps
the ocean
filled to the brim?

But I do not ask,
I am afraid
that you may laugh
and say,
‘You are no linger a child,’
and silence me.

False Truth

So many truths
of our childhood
seem false when we
grow up.

Do we really
turn all truths
into falsehood
as we grow tall?

Giver

He did not save
anything.

People say, he did not leave
even a set of clothing.

He gave away what he had
all through his life.

By giving, he collected
every one around him

The river arrives

A river, I hear, has come
running and panting
to meet me.
But before losing itself
in me, I find
that the river has calmed down
entirely.

No one could even guess
how hard was the river’s journey.

I wonder if we too,
before falling into our self,
would be like the river
so calm and at peace?

I wonder if the ecstacy
of finding ourselves
would be so enormous
that we shall forget
how difficult was our journey.

The river is river.
and I,I;
still the river
in losing itself,
find me.

The river thus
Becomes the sea.

Indeed, in losing ourselves
We find ourselves only.

Vessel

The vessel that would ferry
me across,
would be left behind
after reaching
the other side.

Knowing this,
the heart is still so fondly tied
to the vessel.

Offering

The sun said,
‘Open your door.
My light is yours.’

The trees said,
‘Sit near us.
Our shade is yours.’

The river said,
‘Come close and
touch me. My flowing
water is yours.’

I did what they bid
me to do.

Now the light is mine.
The shade is mine.
The river of my life
flows on smoothly.

Competition

The day I wished
to be god,
I knew that someone
now surely would want
to be larger than god.

Now everyone
is larger than god.

No one is god.

Division

The sky belongs
to everyone, but
walls? They are our own.

The river is for all.
But vessels
are our own.

The earth is for everyone.
But courtyards
are our own.

This limitless world
is for all. But boundaries
are our own.

God

I asked a child,
‘How big is god?’
The child smiled
and stretched both
his arms wide.

The child wanted me to learn
the vastness of god.

And then I knew
that god is only as big
as your own life’s grasp।

Noises

What grows
noiselessly,
breaks
noisily.

Now at every turn in life
there is
noise
only.

Tomorrow?

People here are extremely
conscientious.
They do not do
tomorrow’s work
today.

And tomorrow?
tomorrow never
comes.

Thus they do
nothing.

Destination

As I start on my journey
people ask,
how for shall you walk
this time? And where to?

I smile and move on.
How should I tell them
that this time
I walk
towards myself only?

Nest

I have watched the bird
make its nest.
I have watched the bird
gather grain and then
fly away far in the
sky.

I wish the bird would teach me
how to remain
connected to the earth
while in flight, and
how to keep alive
a sense of the sky,
while in the rest।

The One With Nothing

What do I have
to give?
except this
that no one may
go without
something.

Soulfulness

Life is endless
if it is like the sky.

Life is a dense shade
if it is like a tree.

If it is like the sun,
than life is light.

Each moment is ecstasy
if life has soulfulness
in it.

Flight

The bird called the river
as it flew above it.
The river smiled
and said, ‘Speak, Bird.’

The bird flew higher.
Flying above the cliff
the bird called.
The cliff said softly,
‘Speak, Bird.’

The bird
flew higher and higher.
Its voice got lost.

The bird has returned now
to say,
‘Fly only as high
as the reach of
your own call.’

Nest

I have watched the bird
make its nest.
I have watched the bird
gather grain and then
fly away far in the
sky.

I wish the bird would teach me
how to remain
connected to the earth
while in flight, and
how to keep alive
a sense of the sky,
while in the rest.

Detached

The bird knows
how to gather twigs
for its nest. It knows
how to raise its
younglings.

When the younglings
grow up
the make their separate
nests.
The bird does not mind.
It accepts its aloneness.

The bird dose not complain
to any body.
The bird forgets all the past
moments of crisis.
It remembers
its own songs only.
It remembers singing;
and flying in the sky.

The bird only remembers
how to be a bird.
